Construction Standards & Practices

In construction, there are standards and practices.  A standard is generally defined as a mandatory specification.  A practice is a general rule or procedure.  Over the years in model railroading, concepts and procedures have become accepted as standards in basic layout construction.  Many practices in the hobby have come by innovation and adaptation.  There are many resources for these type of construction standards and practices.  Hobby resources include the NMRA (National Model Railroad Association) and hobby publications such as Model Railroad Hobbyist, Model Railroader Magazine besides the many model railroading clubs and organizations.

The Central District Interchange is no stranger to the standards and practices of the model railroading hobby.  Much of the construction techniques are common in the hobby and learned from the successes and failures of lessons learned from the construction of the Green River Junction Railroad, a sectional model railroad predecessor.  Construction originally started with the standard type NMRA module table and then morphed into a narrower table for the practicality as previously described.

New construction started with the old module model railroading idea of 24" x 48" table tops.
